INTERVIEW: Amit Regev CEO SBSH Mobile Software

Frage. Wie kamen Sie dazu, Software für Pocket PC zu entwickeln?

Antwort. Mein erstes Gerät war ein Handspring Visor von Palm irgendwann damals 1998. Palm waren die Grössten auf dem Markt damals und wenn ich mich richtig erinnere haben Pocket PC erst gerade Eingang in den Markt gefunden.

Damals fing ich an mit Palm OS und den verschiedenen Möglichkeiten, die die Mobile Devices bieten zu spielen und ich wurde süchtig nach all den neuen Möglichkeiten mobil zu sein, die die neuen PDA Geräte mit sich auf dem Markt brachten!

Etwa zwei Jahre später entschied ich, dass es Zeit war von Palm OS auf ein Pocket PC Gerät zu wechseln und ich begann mit verschiedenen Entwicklertools herumzuspielen. Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, war das erste kommerzielle Programm Birth2Day und war entwickelt um die nahenden Geburtstage von Kontakten aus der Kontaktliste anzuzeigen.


F. Würden sie ihren Job eher als Hobby oder als Beruf bezeichnen?

A. Ich begann mit den Entwicklertools zu experimentieren während ich meine Wehrpflicht beim IDF als Teil der lokalen Rekrutierung, also war es damals sicherlich als Teilzeithobby zu bezeichnen. Nur nachdem ich mein Obligatorium beim IDF ein Jahr später beendet hatte, beschloss ich auf professionelle Weise weiter zu gehen mit der mobile-Entwicklung.


F. Wie ist es später zu Ihrem Beruf geworden? Fliessend oder nach einem speziellen Ereignis?

A. Da ich gerade meinen IDF-Dienst beendet hatte, war der Übergang sehr fliessend. Meine Wahlmöglichkeiten waren es, mich bei einer grösseren Firma zu bewerben oder der Mobile-Entwicklung als Vollzeitjob eine Chance zu geben. Da ich einen neuen Weg wählen musste um Vorwärts zu kommen damals, war die Wahl, mit Mobile-Entwicklung weiter zu kommen, eine Naheliegende.


F. Wieviele MitarbeiterInnen beschäftigt ihre Firma zur Zeit?

A. Zur Zeit sind wir 14 Leute inklusive unser PR- und Supportteam. Wir hoffen unser schnelles Wachstum im nächsten Jahr fortsetzen zu können und hoffentlich wird das nächste mal wenn wir die Möglichkeit für ein Interview bekommen die Antwort doppelt so hoch ausfallen.


F. Wie gross ist ungefähr der Jahresumsatz?

A. Weil SBSH keine AG ist, kann ich diese Information leider nicht veröffentlichen.


F. Wieviele Arbeitsstunden inkl. Vermarktung, Support, Entwicklung und Tests benötigte es ungefähr für SBSH Pocket Weather oder Pocket Breeze bis jetzt?

A. Ehrlich gesagt ist es sehr schwer genaue Zahlen für jede Projektarbeit anzugeben. Zum Beispiel geht Supportarbeit immer weiter, weil neue BenutzerInnen unsere Programme registrieren und eine gewisse Prozentzahl benötigt etwas zusätzliche Hilfe von unserem Supportteam, entweder durch die Firmenforen (http://forums.sbsh.net) oder sie kontaktieren unser Supportteam via eMail (support@sbsh.net ).

Auch die Programmentwicklung ist eine andauernde Aufgabe, weil wir täglich an neuen Updates für unsere Applikationen arbeiten. Wir glauben, dass Appilkationsentwicklung sehr wichtig ist um sicher zu stellen, dass unsere Programme den Marktrends folgen und auf diesem Wege den NutzerInnen mehr als nur einmalige Applikation, sondern ein dynamisches Programm liefern mit der Zuversicht, dass jede unserer Applikationen sich weiterentwickeln wird mit neuen Hardwareentwicklungen im mobile-Markt.


F. Wird man reich mit einer Softwareschmiede oder lebt man eher am Existenzminimum? Oder anders ausgedrückt: Kurven Sie im Ferrari durch die Strassen oder träumen Sie nur davon?

A. Ich fahre nicht Ferrari aber ehrlich gesagt würde ich auch keinen kaufen wenn ich könnte. Vieleicht wenn in Zukunft eine Hybridversion erhältlich wäre, würde ich darüber nachdenken :wink: Zurück zur Frage: Ich lebe nicht am Existenxminimum aber wenn man nach dem grossen Geld sucht, sollte man sich einen anderen Markt aussuchen.

Mit so vielen schnellen Veränderungen auf dem mobile-Markt, sowohl bei Software wie auch Hardware, muss man wirklich mobile versiert sein um Applikationen zu entwickeln.


F. Wie und wo findet man seine Mitarbeiter? Wie bei einem "normalen" Job?

A. In der Tat.


F. Was tun Sie gegen Verletzungen Ihres Copyrights (Softwarepiraterie)?

A. All unsere Programme beinhalten einen soliden Registrierungsmechanismus um unsere Benutzer zu schützen und es schwerer zu machen, eine gecrackte Version unserer Applikationen zu erstellen. Nichts desto weniger wissen wir, dass es unmöglich ist, dies komplett zu stoppen und wir arbeiten an mehreren verschiedenen Wegen gleichzeitig um Seiten zu vernichten, die Software illegal vertreiben.


F. Wie sieht die Zukunft aus? Gibt es schon neue Ideen? Wo steht die Firma in zehn Jahren? Können Sie uns vielleicht Hinweise auf zukünftige Produkte und Projekte geben?

A. Der grösste Teil unserer Arbeit und Aktivität heute ist auf neue Ideen und zukünftige Projekte fokussiert. Unsere BenutzerInnen sehen zur Zeit nur wie die aktuellen Applikationen weiterentwickelt werden, aber gleichzeitig werden grosse Anstrengungen für einige neue Projekte unternommen die bald veröffentlicht werden.

Leider kann ich weder zu viel Informationen über einige Projekte an denen gerade gearbeitet wird preis geben, noch über zukünftige Projekte die noch in den anfänglichen Designstadien sind, aber unsere BenutzerInnen können ein paar sehr erfreuliche Neuigkeiten in den nächsten Monaten erwarten.

Ich kann schon erwähnen, dass die BenutzerInnen ziemlich bald SBSH in ein paar neuen Märkten und auf neuen Plattformen aktiv sehen werden. Einige unserer bestverkauften Produkte werden über spannende, neue Kanäle zu finden sein mit denen wir bisher noch nicht gearbeitet haben und wir planen auch ein paar Neuigkeiten, die nicht direkt Softwarebezogen sind die sicherlich spannend für unsere NutzerInnen sein werden! Mehr Nachrichten folgen schon in den nächsten Wochen!

Die Langzeitpläne unserer Firma sind auf die nächsten zwölf bis 24 Monate gerichtet, ich kann also nicht wirklich vorhersagen wo wir in zehn Jahren stehen werden. Ich glaube nicht, dass überhaupt jemand sagen kann, wo der mobile-Markt in zehn Jahren stehen wird. Generell hoffen wir das Wachstum des Unternehmens fortzusetzen, während wir sicherstellen dass SBSH ein toller Ort zum Arbeiten ist und an unserem Markennamen für qualitative Software und persönlichen Support für alle unsere BenutzerInnen arbeiten.


F. Sehen Sie die Softwareschmiede Spb Softwarehouse als Ihren direkten Konkurrenten? Und wenn ja, was tun Sie oder haben Sie vor zu tun, damit ihre Produkte denjenigen von Spb Softwarehouse vorgezogen werden?

A. Ich betrachte sie als einen der Mitspieler in diesem schnell wachsenden Markt. Tatsächlich hatten wir ein paar mit Spb konkurrierende Applikationen in den letzten Jahren und ich glaube, da beide Unternehmen weiter wachsen, wird dieser Wettbewerb sich auch weiterentwickeln. Gleichzeitig glaube ich, dass jede Firma ihr eigenes look&feel mit ihren eigenen Lösungen liefert und insgesammt es eine gesunde und positive Wettbewerbssituation schafft.

Wir haben ein paar Überraschungen im Ärmel für das kommende Jahr aber ich kann hier jetzt nicht mehr darüber sagen.


F. Was denken Sie, haben Ihre Produkte allgemein für Vorteile gegenüber von Spb Produkten?

A. Ich glaube wir liefern mehr Flexibilität und ein besseres Speichermanagement mit all unseren Applikationen als Beweis der Qualität unserer Programme. Neben unseren Programmen geniessen Benutzerinnen eine schnell wachsende Community mit beinahe 90'000 aktiven NutzerInnen und nahezu unendlich viel gratis Ressourcen, die von unseren BenutzerInnen geteilt werden und wirklich die ganze Softwareerfahrung bereichern.


F. Wo liegen ihrer Ansicht nach die Nachteile ihrer Produkte?

A. Hehe :grin: Leider werde ich diese Frage hier nicht beantworten. Aber wir arbeiten auch daran...

Q. How and why did you start to develop software for PocketPC?

A. My first device was a Palm Handspring Visor somewhere back in year 1998. Palm were the largest player in the market back at those days and if I recall properly Pocket PC devices were only starting to enter the market at the same time.

Back then I was starting to play with the Palm OS and study the different capabilities mobile devices offer and I got hooked to all of the new mobility capabilities PDA devices brought with them to the market!

About two years later I decided it was time to switch from the Palm OS to a Pocket PC device and started playing around with different development tools. If I remember correctly, the first commercial application was called Birth2Day and was designed to display the upcoming birthdays list taken from the Contacts application.

Q. Would you have considered software development to have been more your hobby or your profession then?

A. I started experimenting with development while finishing my mandatory army service at the IDF as part of the local drafts, so it was definitely considered as a part-time hobby back then. Only after finishing my mandatory service at the IDF a year later I decided to move ahead with mobile development in a professional manner.

Q. How did it transform to your profession later on? Was it more of a smooth transition or after a specific event?

A. Since I was just finishing my IDF service the transition was really smooth. My choices were to try and apply for a position in a larger company or to give mobile development a try as a full-time job. Since I had to choose a new path to move ahead with back at the time, the choice to move ahead with mobile development seemed to be the natural choice for me.

Q. How many employees you are currently employing in your company, please?

A. At the moment we are 14 people including also our PR and support team. We hope to continue our rapid growth during the upcoming year too and hopefully the next time we will get a chance to run an interview the answer will be doubled :smile:

Q. What is approximately your annual business volume?

A. Since SBSH is not a public company unfortunately I can't disclose this information.

Q. How many man-hours, including marketing, support, development und debugging did it take approximately for each iLauncher, Pocket Breeze and PhoneWeaver until now?

A. Frankly it is really hard to give exact figures for each of the projects work. For instance, support work is continues and takes place all the time as new users will register our applications and a certain percentage will need some additional help from our support team, either through our company forums (http://forums.sbsh.net ) or contact our support team by email (support@sbsh.net ).

Actual application development is also a continues task as we are working on new updates for our applications on a daily basis. We believe that continues development is highly important to make sure that our applications will continue to follow the market trends, this way delivering our users with more than a single time application, but instead delivering our users with a dynamic application with active development and with the confidence that each of our applications will continue to evolve along with new hardware developments in the mobile market.

Q. Can you get rich in a software company or are you living on the edge? Or to ask differently: Are you actually driving or dreaming a Ferrari?

A. I'm not driving a Ferrari, but honestly I wouldn't buy one even if I could... maybe if a hybrid version will be available in the future I will think of it :wink: Going back to the answer, I'm not leaving on the edge, but if you're looking for big bucks you better find a different market.

With so many rapid changes on the mobile market, both hardware and software, you need to be a real mobile-savvy to develop mobile applications.

Q. Where and how to find employees? Is it just like for any other job?

A. Indeed.

Q. What do you do against violations of your copyrights?

A. All of our applications include a solid registration mechanism designed to protect our users and make it harder to created cracked versions of our applications. Nevertheless, we know that it is impossible to completely stop this and we are working in several different ways simultaneously to eliminate sites that distribute software illegally.

Q. How about the future? Are there already new ideas? Where will your company be in 10 years? Can you give us any hint about future products and projects, please?

A. Most of our work and activity at the company today is focused on new ideas and future projects. Our users are currently exposed only to existing applications development, but at the same time major efforts and work are being made towards some of the new projects that will soon be released.

Unfortunately I'm unable to disclose too much information about some of the projects that are currently being worked on nor future projects in initial design stages, but our users can expect some very exciting news in the next few months.

I can already mention that pretty soon users will see SBSH active in a few new markets and reaching new platforms, some of our best-selling applications will be included with new exciting channels that we haven't worked with until now and we also plan to have some news that are not directly software related which will definitely deliver exciting news to our users! More news will follow in the next couple of weeks already!

Our company long-term plans are focused for the next 12 to 24 months, so I can't really predict where we will be in 10 years from now. I don't think anyone can even say where the mobile market will be in 10 years. Generally we hope to continue the company's growth while making sure SBSH is a great working place and maintain our brand name for quality software and personal support for all of our users.

Q. Do you consider Spb Softwarehouse to be your direct competition? If yes, what do you do or do you plan to do to get your products preferred over the ones by the Spb Softwarehouse?

A. I consider them as one of the players in this rapidly growing market. Indeed we had a few competing applications with Spb in the past few years and I believe as both companies continue to grow this competition will continue to evolve. At the same time, I believe that each company delivers its own look&feel with its own solutions and overall this creates a healthy and positive market competition.

We have a few surprises up our sleeves for the coming year, but as such I can't say much more here :smile:

Q. What do you think are the advantages of your products compared to the ones by Spb in general?

A. I believe we deliver more flexibility and better memory management with all of our applications as an evidence to our application quality. Alongside with our applications users will enjoy rapidly growing community with almost 90,000 active users and almost unlimited amount of free resources shared between our users that really enrich the entire software experience.

Q. What are the disadvantages of your software?

A. Hehe :smile: Unfortunately I'm not going to answer this one here - but we are working on this too..
